Ethereum's $1.61B ETF Drain: Will $13.2B Vaults Hold ETH?

U.S. spot Ethereum exchange-traded funds recorded $1.61 billion in net outflows during October 2026, logging their heaviest monthly redemption wave since launching on Wall Street in July 2024. Five consecutive weeks of institutional withdrawals tracked by SoSoValue compressed total ETF vault assets from $17.60 billion to $13.22 billion and drove ETH down 16.1% to $2,285, marking its weakest October performance since 2016.
Five Straight Weeks of Redemptions Erase $4.38B in ETF Assets
SoSoValue fund flow records confirm that U.S. spot Ethereum ETFs bled capital across all five weekly settlement periods in October. The $1.61 billion monthly exodus surpassed the previous outflow record of $1.42 billion set in November 2025.
Withdrawals peaked during the week ended October 9, when institutional desks redeemed $542 million across five trading sessions. That reversal snapped a three-month inflow streak that had added $3.05 billion to Ethereum funds between July and September.
Combined redemptions and spot depreciation cut total net assets across U.S. Ethereum ETFs from $17.60 billion to $13.22 billion. Cumulative net inflows since the July 2024 launch narrowed to $12.29 billion as ETH fell from $2,684.71 on October 1 to $2,242.50 at month-end.
Spot Volume Plunges 76% as Devcon 8 Confronts Upgrade Delays
Secondary market depth thinned alongside the ETF drain as daily Ethereum trading volume dropped 76.3% from $19.53 billion on Saturday to $4.63 billion on Sunday. CoinGecko data shows Sunday marked Ethereum's lowest single-day turnover since August 17 and trailed the seven-day average of $11.18 billion by 58%.
While Bitcoin recorded $66 billion in daily turnover over the same window, Ethereum traded inside a tight $23.51 intraday range near $2,256. Core developers convening at Devcon 8 in Mumbai from November 3 to November 6 now face heightened scrutiny over mainnet fee capture and the delayed Glamsterdam upgrade.
Can $13.22B in Institutional Custody Absorb Further Selling?
The remaining $13.22 billion held inside U.S. spot ETF vaults—backed by $12.29 billion in cumulative net inflows—prevents a disorderly custody liquidation, as over 80% of institutional shares created since July 2024 remain intact. However, with daily spot volume compressed to $4.63 billion and ETF creations stalled for five straight weeks, passive vault holdings alone cannot halt downward spot pressure until weekly institutional flows turn positive.
